Important Changes to Standards:

In last month's Newsletter I mentioned the changes being introduced for loadshifting and how the new Work Health and Safety legislation may impose greater demands on controllers of machines.

I particularly wanted to alert you to issues regarding assessments of competency and determining the appropriate standard to be used.

In past editions of this Newsletter I have endeavoured to keep you up to date with changes in standards and affecting machines, particularly those where there are several standards to choose from,

such as Elevating Work Platforms.

Over the past three weeks I have been reviewing and rewriting our manual for Dogmen while we patiently await the release of the new High Risk Work Licence assessments being developed by

Safe Work Australia. All this has got me thinking about 'standards' generally and the Safety Alert from WorkCover this month, which relates specifically to the dogging and crane 'assessment standards'

left me thinking that we take a lot for granted when we rely on others to determine appropriate standards without conducting our own due diligence.

SAFETY ALERTS

The following Safety Alert from WorkCover refers to a fatality that occurred during operations with a mobile crane when workers were in close proximity to the suspended load.

Every lift should be adequately planned, including exclusion zones, and the plan agreed by the crane operator, dogger/rigger, site controller and others in the vicinity. Loads under tension, as in this case,

can act in unexpected ways.
